Did any of you car buyers consider Peugeot? They are another European car made in Mexico. We had a diesel-powered 306 wagon in the UK, which was a great machine - 33 mpg, front wheel drive, roomy. Am thinking about selling our US car NOB, then buying a Peugeot down here with Mexican plates. _________________ Stay in touch. |

I did consider a Peugeot, however, I found that I couldn't pronounce it as Mexicans pronounce it. I felt that if I had problems with the car, I could never tell a taxi driver to what dealership to take me. _________________ I worry that all of my wisdom is derived from bad analogies. |

That's the same problem with trying to find Cointreau in the stores. _________________ Stay in touch. |

I know this thread is becoming tangential, but you guys make me laugh, and think!
Let's see: Peugeot=Pay-ooh-hay-oh-t
Cointreau= Co-eehn-tray=owh-ooh
Regardless, you're making me think of fuel efficient cars that are practical
in Mexico, especially since the NOB gov. has initiated the "cash for clunkers" program.
Have heard (2nd. hand) that there are lots of "hoops" to jump through to get that $3500 or max $4500 for the exchange/buy. |

What I have heard, but since I don't know for sure, could be malicious rumor, but here it goes......
These cars are just great and fine, UNTIL, something goes wrong, you go to the dealer, and it takes LITERALLY months for the dealer to get the parts to fix it. (from France, maybe via 'slow boat through China) |

BJ, you've got the pronunciation just right. Comes from living in Louisiana, I bet (that's Loh-ooh-eesee-ahnah, n'est-ce pas?). _________________ Stay in touch. |

Some years ago in the States I had a Peugeot - it was a fine car. But, as has been suggested parts can be a REAL problem. One of the main reasons we went for the Jetta is that it is made here in Puebla, MX - NO parts problems.
By the way it is a very fine riding car on these miserable roads. We got the European model with the 4 cylinder engine - much more efficient than the half Lamborghini 5 cyl and darn near as much 'apparent' power. _________________ http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/ |

Well, we had no service problems with our Peugeot in Europe, of course. I believe it is made in Mexico now, but no longer sold in the USofA.
Take care of the Jetta on the topebahn tomorrow. _________________ Stay in touch. |

Well I think they are a fine car - I would just check out the part situation. Maybe the parts problem Ignacio refers to has been resolved. I understand they have a fine dealership here. I have heard that there are problems getting parts here for BMW's and Mercedes - nothing on Peugeot. _________________ http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/ |

Bueno, I've been checking the available brands and models on the Web and I think we'll stay with our Subaru Outback after all. There's no dealer service in Xalapa, but Veracruz Puerto has one. I would hate to give up the AWB on rainy trips, and the automatic mixture adjustment going up and down the mountains. If I learn to navigate the narrow entradas around here, maybe I'll quit scraping the paint job.
Have a good trip NoB, John and Anita. _________________ Stay in touch. |

Yah, I know, Bob, but it tastes bloody awful. You can buy Cointreau in Mexico City at a chain called La Europea - for less than it costs in the US of A - but I haven't been able to find a seller in Xalapa. _________________ Stay in touch. |
