This is for anyone who wants to try and get out of Mexico in one day, and is concerned with hotel prices NoB.

I always stay at the Best Western Rose Garden, about 3 miles north of the International Bridge, on Rte 77/83. To get there you take the PRICE RD. OLD ALICE RD. exit off 77. Coming north, you get off and follow the outer road to the next overpass (stay in the left lane), hang a U-ey, and it's right there.

I am a frequent flyer with Best Western, and always stayed there when coming from and going to Mexico....so I am paying (as of 6 months ago) the same price of $53/night, that I was in 2006. I think the normal price was $63....and this includes free coffee in your room, a free Mexican breakfast (buffet-style eggs, frijoles, potatoes, pancakes, coffee and cold cereal) in the morning, at the on-property cafe. In the same building as the cafe, there is a full service bar, patronized by mostly Mexican/Americans, speaking Spanish. The bartenders are bi-lingual, so don't worry. A GIANT margarita sure goes down good, after a harrowing day on Mexican Roads.

There are two other restaurants within walking distance; a Burger King, about 100 yards away, and a sit-down Chinese restaurant, even closer. I would only say that if you eat at the latter, ask them to remove the baby corn from any dish you order. It is canned to begin with, and the flavor permeates many of their dishes.

Good tip Rick - we have stayed there too - of course the Sota La Marina is half the price with pretty much everything sans the breakfast - They do have coffee and pan however - and you are not having to drive quite so far the first day Wink

That's right John, and believe me, there's a lot to be said for that. Not to mention that you'd be entering the border at mid-day, and this might also be a plus. I think if I had someone with me, I would definitely make it a two-day trip. But once leaving Tampico/Altamira, the roads are so good, the drive is painless and I sort of get tunnel vision, with the border the only thing in sight.

It might be worth noting, that at least as of this writing, the Best Western Rose Garden is also the closest hotel with the most direct route to the border. Except for the traffic light at International Dr., it's less than 5 minutes on Rte. 77.
